WHAT TO DO IN FEBRUARY FOR YOUR VEGETABLE GARDEN

Do you know what to do each month when it comes to your Vegetable Garden? I didn’t when I first started to grow food, so here are some tips on things I’ve learned to do in February for the success of your Vegetable Garden. I will be posting a video on this series each month so come back for more tips! My goal is to help you have an abundance of home grown food.
***Check out January if you missed it here***

CATEGORY #1 - THINGS TO DO

  1. Mulch (a lot of weed seeds germinate in early March so you want to try to prevent some of that)
  2. Clean/Sharpen your tools (some of my favs are here)
  3. Indoor Plant Maintenance (these tend to get neglected when the Spring Garden is in full force)
    1. Repot
    2. Fertilize
  4. Prune Fruiting trees (check out this video on what to look for)
  5. Fertilize Blooming trees
    1. They need the extra food for energy to set fruit.
  6. Seed annuals for added color – to welcome the pollinators or for your landscape
  7. If you purchased your soil amendments from Jan – now is the time to prep your soil.
  8. Develop your weekly maintenance schedule. Pick a day of the week where you can do 1 task.
    1. Fertilize
    2. Weed (newly germinated seeds)
    3. Pesticides (preventive)
    4. Remove Dead Foliage
    5. Turn Compost / Worm Farm maintenance
    6. Succession Planting
  9. If you are thinking about adding irrigation – this is the time to consider so your garden is ready in Spring.  (check out this video on how I installed mine)

End of Month

At the end of the month, you want to repot any indoor seedlings that have outgrown their container and your last frost isn’t near. *If you used 48 cell trays, transfer to 3″ or greater pots.

You want to start introducing your indoor seedlings to the outdoors to harden and be ready for Spring planting.

  • Start with morning or evening sun (after sunrise or before sunset for a couple of hours) every day increasing the time until they can withstand the full day.
