WHAT TO DO IN FEBRUARY FOR YOUR VEGETABLE GARDEN
Do you know what to do each month when it comes to your Vegetable Garden? I didn’t when I first started to grow food, so here are some tips on things I’ve learned to do in February for the success of your Vegetable Garden. I will be posting a video on this series each month so come back for more tips! My goal is to help you have an abundance of home grown food.
***Check out January if you missed it here***
CATEGORY #1 - THINGS TO DO
- Mulch (a lot of weed seeds germinate in early March so you want to try to prevent some of that)
- Clean/Sharpen your tools (some of my favs are here)
- Indoor Plant Maintenance (these tend to get neglected when the Spring Garden is in full force)
- Repot
- Fertilize
- Prune Fruiting trees (check out this video on what to look for)
- Fertilize Blooming trees
- They need the extra food for energy to set fruit.
- Seed annuals for added color – to welcome the pollinators or for your landscape
- If you purchased your soil amendments from Jan – now is the time to prep your soil.
- Develop your weekly maintenance schedule. Pick a day of the week where you can do 1 task.
- Fertilize
- Weed (newly germinated seeds)
- Pesticides (preventive)
- Remove Dead Foliage
- Turn Compost / Worm Farm maintenance
- Succession Planting
- If you are thinking about adding irrigation – this is the time to consider so your garden is ready in Spring. (check out this video on how I installed mine)
CATEGORY #2 - WHAT TO PURCHASE
- Fruit Trees – critical time to order
- Buy Local
- Order Dormant Trees online – Jan/Feb only

- Mulch (6″ cover for fruit trees)
- Potato Seeds & Sweet Potatoes starts
- Call your local nursery to make sure you know when they will stock – these go fast!

End of Month
At the end of the month, you want to repot any indoor seedlings that have outgrown their container and your last frost isn’t near. *If you used 48 cell trays, transfer to 3″ or greater pots.
You want to start introducing your indoor seedlings to the outdoors to harden and be ready for Spring planting.
- Start with morning or evening sun (after sunrise or before sunset for a couple of hours) every day increasing the time until they can withstand the full day.
